Special Edition! The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is, “A Universe of Stories,” and David Bowie certainly epitomized that concept in popular music. At this session we’ll listen to a selection of his work, read the lyrics, look for stories inside the songs, and examine some of the writing techniques he used.
50 years ago on this very day, David Bowie recorded his breakthrough single, “Space Oddity.” Bowie had been struggling for years to achieve a foothold in the music business, when his record label saw the potential of using the upcoming Apollo 11 moon landing as a marketing angle to promote his new tune, releasing it 5 days before the landing, on July 11. Like any good fiction writer, Bowie filled his songs with colorful characters and intriguing situations throughout his decades-long career. Co-sponsored by the Voorheesville Public Library.
